Learn About the History of Therma-Tru

Therma-Tru made a bold innovation for the home-building market by introducing an entryway door that looked as beautiful as wood and was more durable. Since then, we have been revolutionizing the industry and have maintained our standard as one of the most preferred brands of entry doors.

1962-1984

The roots of Therma-Tru company date back to 1962 when David Welles, a retired Owens Corning executive purchased a bankrupt building supply company in Toledo, Ohio. In 1983, the company launched its Fiber-Classic style, the first fiberglass door in the market. They made a benchmark by creating a product that was never seen before. It was an entryway door that looked as beautiful as wood but with exceptional performance.

“People just couldn’t believe it,” says Deke Welles, the founder’s son and President of Therma-Tru from 1989 to 2001. The product that looked so fine was actually made of fiberglass.

1985-2002

In 1985, Therma-Tru opened a 60,000-square-foot plant in Butler, Indiana. Within 10 years, a classic-craft fiberglass door was developed and introduced, which was followed a few years later by the Smooth-Star collection. In 2000, a full-door system was patented.

2003-2016

In 2003, Therma-Tru became part of the Fortune Brands Home & Security family. In September 2009, Therma-Tru and Fypon, the brand name leader in the urethane millwork merged to bring their complementary products to market together.

In order to meet the evolving expectations of the customers, a DoorWays App was introduced in 2015 which helped homeowners visualize new doors in their own homes.

Therma-Tru Today

Therma-Tru’s legacy of innovation continues with an investment in a new Innovation Center which opened in early 2018. Located in Monclova, Ohio, just minutes from their corporate headquarters, the Innovation Center is a 30,000-square-foot facility that houses Research and Development and Product Management teams.

As a leading manufacturer of fiberglass and steel exterior door systems, Therma-Tru is the most preferred brand for entry doors among building professionals. The company has not only expanded its product offerings but has also joined additional communities.

Today, Therma-Tru’s corporate headquarters is just outside Toledo in Maumee, Ohio, and their new Innovation Center is in Monclova, Ohio. The business has two manufacturing facilities, one in Butler, Indiana, and the other in Matamoros, Mexico. Fypon has manufacturing locations in Yantai, China, Matamoros, and Mexico. They offer a vast selection of products throughout North America.
